BABEL LAB
PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR:

Genesis Arizmendi , PhD, CCC-SLP

MEET THE LAB PI!

Dr. Genesis Arizmendi is the director and the Principal Investigator (PI) of the BABEL Lab.

Dr. Arizmendi is an Assistant Professor in the College of Science at the University of Arizona, with appointments in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Cognitive Science. She is an interdisciplinary clinician-scientist, and a certified and licensed speech language pathologist with over 10 years of clinical experience, committed to improving clinical-research practices and educational outcomes for Spanish-English speaking communities. Dr. Arizmendi earned her PhD in Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences from the University of Arizona and completed postdoctoral training in Educational Psychology at the University of New Mexico and in Special Education at the University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Center for Equity Promotion.

Within the framework of her research program, Dr. Arizmendi aims to mitigate disparities and advance equity within the educational and healthcare systems. As so, she examines the intersection of cognition, language, and academic achievement in bilingual children with diverse learning profiles, spanning: typical development, developmental language disorder, and difficulties with mathematics and reading. By building bridges between equitable practices across education and research for Latine-identifying communities, Dr. Arizmendi further explores the influence of policy and social context on educational outcomes.

As a proud fronteriza who grew up on the U.S.-Mexico border and triple UArizona Alumni turned faculty, she is excited about leading research in her community that addresses the needs of her community. #BearDown!
