Early Bilingualism

Feliz día del amor y amistad! 💞💌

Today, we share an exploration of a few of topics related to bilingualism and early development - brought to you by one of our stellar students in the BABEL Lab @amandap._.feng 🌟

Infants are born with the ability to recognize the sound patterns of their mother’s language because of their exposure to that language in the womb. There is no sign that bilingual exposure and development leads to delays in learning - there is just a distribution of development across languages.

It’s important to take a step back and ensure that both languages are being considered and accounted for in development and to continue supporting and maintaining a bilingually developing child’s languages to reach the best outcomes in bilingual language and learning - this is supported in the literature by dual language programs! ✨👩🏽‍🏫
