Hi y’all! I’m Dr. Genesis Arizmendi and I am the director of the BABEL Lab at the University of Arizona. I am a first year Assistant Professor in the College of Science (Speech, Language, and Hearing Sciences and Cognitive Science) and am thrilled to begin this new journey on the tenure track. I am an Arizona native who grew up on the Nogales Arizona/Mexico border. I earned my BS, MS, and PhD degrees @uarizona in SLHS. I am a very proud triple Wildcat alumni turned faculty. Don’t worry, I also completed a postdoc @uofnm and another @utaustintx in educational psychology and in special education (go lobos! 🐺 go longhorns!🤘🏽). Learning about bilingual kids across the southwest was illuminating, showing similarities but also differences stemming from state, culture, and policies. My goal is to build equitable practices across education, healthcare, and research for Latine children and their families.
I am a certified and licensed speech language pathologist who has practiced clinically for 10 years, specializing with Spanish-English bilingual students and their families. I’ve worked in the public schools, outpatient rehab clinics, and private practice/telehealth. This has led to a lot of the research I explore and am excited to begin in the BABEL lab this year. I’m fortunate to begin this first semester with the lab with rockstar students that will be helping us take this research program off the ground.
We will be sharing research and findings that is of interest to: parents, educators, researchers, and community members. Stay tuned to learn more about the BABEL lab, our awesome research assistants, and the related research on Bilingualism And the Brain in Education and Language!
