Every story is different and that includes the development of a bilingual child’s languages! Today, we share more on how families can be supported in developing a child’s languages, brought to you by one of our fantastic undergraduate research assistants @prisciladdiaz 🌟
Family support is extremely important when learning more than one language. Not only does it take time and patience, but the child needs to have the opportunity to use and hear both languages in their every day life. Learning a language is about building a connection with the culture. When families help their children learn a language it motivates the child to keep practicing and become stronger in both languages. It is never ok to discourage the use of the home language. Children need their home language to continue to build their understanding of all of their languages!
